We know you've seen those breathalyzer costumes at Spirit Halloween. "Blow here" instructions are placed in the most interesting of places. We get it, it's really funny.
But that's a costume, it's meant to be funny. People who have to deal with the real deal don't find breathalyzers and ignition interlock devices as funny. As great as we are at helping our clients through such a rough spot, we know they'd rather avoid this process completely. So it's important to drive sober after those costume parties.
Halloween... It's such a fun holiday, filled with candy, costumes, and super fun celebrations. Trick-or-treaters excitedly ask for goodies. Adults get in on the fun too with dressing up in costumes and enjoying spiked witches' brew. Boos and booze, it's the perfect combination. Until someone does something really scary...
Getting behind the wheel after drinking is always a very dangerous decision. On Halloween night, drivers have even more to pay attention to on the roads. They should also keep an eye out for pedestrians — whether they be children trick-or-treating or adults who have had too much to drink. While walking is usually a much safer option than driving, you should be especially careful walking on Halloween since there is so much traffic and so many distractions.
No need to add drunk driving to the list of scary things.
The U.S. Department of Transportation shared a spooky statistic: During Halloween night during the years 2014-2018, there were 145 people killed in drunk driving crashes.
If you plan to drink, plan for a sober driver to take you home. Is it your turn to be the designated driver? Take that role seriously and do not consume alcohol, not even one drink. Always remember to plan ahead if you will be celebrating:
- Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.
- Don't let a friend drink and drive. Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.
- If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact law enforcement.
