How to take care of an ignition interlock device in the extreme heat

POSTED ON: 08/27/2020

Many of us in Louisiana deal with periods of extreme heat. Have you ever thought about how the heat could affect your automobile IID? If you live in an area where it can reach temperatures of 100 degrees some days, it’s a valid concern to think about your device’s reliability. Here are just a few general notes about caring for your breathalyzer during these hot times.

Our products are built to handle heat and other elements

For years, our team has been testing and continuously improving our products to set the standard and provide our clients the best interlock experience possible. A properly certified ignition interlock provider also follows and continues to maintain the federal NHTSA standards in its devices. These standards outline the most current specifications for ignition interlock devices. In these standards, ignition interlock devices must be able to withstand certain environmental elements such as extreme heat.

Don't get burned by a product that isn't as good as ours

Although some other providers may have products that could cause frustrations in higher temperatures, our clients do not experience ignition interlock issues with the heat. Our interlock devices are very durable, and we simply recommend that you treat your unit like other electronic devices. Some suggestions that may apply to you depending on your product and location:

  • Avoid exposing the interlock to direct sunlight for long periods of time. Instead, place your alcohol tester under your seat or somewhere in the shade when you are not driving if possible.
  • If you live in an especially dry area, you MAY be instructed to disconnect your head unit from the curly cord and take it inside with you for extra protection. ***Make sure to confirm that you can disconnect the head unit with your program oversight authority or with Smart Start of Louisiana BEFORE attempting to do so since some areas do not allow you to disconnect your head unit!

We'll help you weather this process

Whether you're used to living in this hot, humid southern climate or you moved here from somewhere else and this is new for you, we'll make sure your interlock program is handled seamlessly from start to finish no matter what.

A hot topic for us: Customer service

The bottom line is that we stand by our interlock products and the technology. If you have concerns due to extreme weather conditions or anything else, do not hesitate to reach out to our friendly customer service representatives by phone or by using our contact form.
