The holiday season is known for being merry and bright, but it is also known for being the deadliest season when it comes to drunk driving. Unfortunately, every holiday season, lives are lost due to impaired drivers.
While ignition interlock devices are certainly a way to make sure the driver is sober, you've got other options too. You can designate a safe and sober driver to give you a ride home, or you can call a taxi or rideshare service. Remember that even a small amount of alcohol can make you a very dangerous driver.
Always have a plan before you head out for the evening. If you wait until after you’ve been drinking to figure out how to get from one place to the next, you will already be too impaired to make the right choices.
And if you are the sober designated driver, make sure you drive extra carefully especially if you're leaving a party at night. According to NHTSA, nighttime driving in December 2021 was significantly more dangerous than daytime driving, with 29% of drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes between the hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. being drunk. Almost half (43%) of drivers involved in fatal crashes between the hours of midnight and 2:59 a.m. were drunk, likely when bars are closing and people are driving home.
It’s hard to have a happy holiday when you’re arrested for drunk driving. Keep the season merry and bright by following the law and refusing to drink and drive. During this busy winter holiday season, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is teaming up with local law enforcement organizations to urge drivers to think twice before drinking and driving. They want all drivers to remember this lifesaving message: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Drivers will see officers working on a special high-visibility enforcement campaign to spread the message about the dangers of drunk driving.
If you've already received a DUI or just want to voluntarily install to help you resist the urge to drive drunk, call us at 1-866-447-8686 to see how our interlock products can help you navigate your sleigh (or other vehicle) more safely.
