Frequently asked question: Is an ignition interlock the same as a handheld breathalyzer?

Answer: No. While ignition interlocks and handheld breathalyzers both test your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC), an ignition interlock device is installed in a vehicle and prevents the car from starting if there is alcohol detected. A handheld breathalyzer only detects alcohol and may tell you the concentration.

You may hear the words used interchangeably in a casual way, and we even use both words interchangeably on our website to make sure we show up when people search either way. But there technically is a difference.
